My wife and I decided to hire a guide for the Narrows. It made for a wonderful orientation not only for the Narrows, but also other featured hikes at Zion we were planning (including Angel's Landing/West Rim Trail and the Subway Bottom Up.) Our guide was an absolute delight -- giving us expert advice on all of these adventures.

Guided Narrows FAQWhat is the Guided Narrows Hike?
The Guided Narrows Hike is a full-day interpretive hike through the beginning section of The Narrows in Zion National Park, led by knowledgeable local guides. It covers approximately five miles round trip through the Virgin River (stopping at the beginning of Wall Street) with multiple river crossings and rugged terrain. Guides provide insights into the canyon’s geology, natural history, and local ecology.
How long does the tour last?
Tours typically start early in the morning (around 7:00–7:30 am) and conclude between 2:00 pm and 3:30 pm, depending on conditions and pace. Total hiking time is generally 6–8 hours.
Where do we meet, and what is the starting point?
Participants meet at Zion Adventures, 36 Lion Blvd., Springdale, UT (Shuttle Stop 3).
From there, the group enters Zion National Park and begins hiking through the Narrows after taking the shuttle to the Temple of Sinawava area. What gear is included?
Zion Adventures outfits participants with the essential equipment based on water and weather conditions:
Do I need to bring anything?
Yes. Guided tours do not include the Zion National Park entry fee, which you must bring as a pass or receipt.
Additionally you should bring:
How difficult is the hike?
Hiking The Narrows involves walking directly in the Virgin River over uneven, slippery rocks. Although the tour stays within a manageable portion of the canyon, participants should have moderate fitness and balance. The water depth varies throughout the year, and conditions can be more strenuous than a typical trail hike.
What should I wear?
Wear quick-dry, moisture-wicking layers and avoid cotton. Clothing that can get wet is expected—especially for excursions into colder water. Layering is essential in shoulder seasons and winter. Proper footwear is provided, but socks, base layers, and a comfortable backpack make the experience more enjoyable.
Can children participate?
Guided tours are suitable for families, but guardian judgment on age and ability is recommended. The hike includes walking through river water, which can be challenging for young children. Please contact Zion Adventures for specific age-range recommendations.
Can I hike further than the guided tour goes?
Due to regulations by Zion National Park, all commercially guided tours turn around after 2.5 miles (at the beginning of Wall Street).
For hikers wishing to go deeper into The Narrows beyond the guided section, rental gear and orientation options are available to help you explore independently. |
