Which Narrows Rental Gear Is Right for You


​Choosing the right gear for hiking The Narrows depends on water temperature, river flow, and the time of year you plan to hike. Conditions in the canyon can change quickly, and the right equipment plays a major role in comfort, safety, and overall enjoyment.

Our Narrows rental packages are designed around typical seasonal conditions so you can feel confident you’re choosing gear that’s appropriate for your hike and current conditions—without having to guess.

We've broken things down into three different packages to best suit the Narrows:
Reserving Dry Bibs & Dry Suits is recommended October 1st - Mid May. ​
Footwear Package
Best for warmer months and lower water levels. Includes canyon boots, neoprene socks, and a walking stick to improve traction, balance, and comfort while hiking in the river. Your feet will still get wet, but neoprene socks keep your feet warm. Special canyon boots protect your toes, provide proper ankle support and have grippy soles for walking through the river. Our custom made walking sticks help you maintain balance & check water depth and are more sturdy than trekking poles for this particular hike.
Dry Bib Package
Ideal for cooler conditions or shoulder seasons. Dry bibs help keep your lower body dry and insulated while allowing flexibility and ease of movement throughout the hike. ​Good in fall and late spring when air temperatures are warm, but river temperature is cool. Bibs go up to your armpits and provide a bit more security than just shoes. Some choose bibs in winter instead of a drysuit, however water temperatures can drop into the upper 30s/low 40s and if you aren't careful, you could still get water in them.
Dry Suit Package
Recommended for cold weather or higher water conditions. Dry suits provide maximum warmth and protection by sealing water out completely, making them the best choice for winter Narrows hikes. The Kokotat Dry Suit we provide is custom built specifically for the Narrows. It provides you with the most security and assurance. Using a dry suit instead of dry bibs allows you to relax and not worry about water depth since you're secure up to your neck.
Important Notes:
  
  • Dry bibs have latex gaskets on the ankles to keep the water out; dry suits have gaskets on ankles and wrists.
  • ​Dry gear material provides a waterproof layer but does not provide insulation. You'll want to wear warm layers underneath when air and water temperatures are cool; thinner layers in fall & spring, thicker thermal layers in winter.
  • Your gear will be available for pick up when we open. If you want to get an early start, you can stop by the evening before and we'll gladly outfit you if your sizes are available. 
  • Gear is due back by shop close.
  • If you are hiking the Zion Narrows top-down and are taking a shuttle before we open, please plan to arrive the evening before your hike in order to pick up your gear.
  • Full payment is charged at time of booking. Cancellations more than 7 days from your rental are subject to a 95% refund. Cancellations made within 7 days of your rental are non-refundable. If Zion Adventures® cancels due to weather, you will receive a full refund.
  • There may be times that we do not recommend renting equipment due to probable weather. If a guest chooses to attempt to hike and takes equipment, we may offer store credit only if the gear is unused.

Hiking The Narrows in Winter

Winter is one of the most unique times to hike The Narrows in Zion National Park. With minimal crowds, unobstructed views, and a quieter canyon atmosphere, winter allows visitors to experience Zion at a slower, more intentional pace. While cold conditions deter some travelers, this season can also be one of the most rewarding and memorable times to explore the canyon.

During winter, daytime temperatures in the Narrows often hover around the low 40s, while the Virgin River remains near freezing. Cold air settles into Zion Canyon overnight, creating higher wind chill in the early morning hours, and sunlight rarely reaches the canyon floor. These conditions make proper equipment essential for both comfort and safety.

For winter Narrows hikes, we strongly recommend renting dry suits or dry bibs to keep water off your skin and insulating layers dry. Pairing dry gear with proper synthetic layers, warm hats, and gloves helps maintain core temperature throughout the hike. Taking your time is equally important—moving at a slower pace allows you to navigate icy terrain safely and fully take in the beauty of the canyon.

How Narrows Gear Rentals Work

Renting gear for The Narrows is straightforward, and reserving online ahead of time helps ensure availability—especially during busy seasons and changing conditions.

Reserve online in advance: Booking ahead allows us to prepare the correct gear and sizes for your hike and helps you avoid delays on busy days.

Pick up your gear: Pick up your rental gear the night before your hike for an early start, or when we open at 8:00am. Evening pickup is recommended if you want to maximize your time in the canyon.

Get fitted and informed: At pickup, our staff will help confirm sizing and answer questions about current conditions. To be on the safe side, check in with us about the weather. We monitor the weather in the canyon and throughout the larger Virgin River drainage so you can make informed decisions before heading out.

Plan for timing and seasonal factors: During August, we recommend hiking earlier in the day and exiting the river by early afternoon. Summer monsoon storms can change conditions quickly and may create deeper water in parts of the Narrows. In colder conditions, selecting dry bibs or dry suits can make a significant difference in comfort and safety.

When should I pick up my rental gear?
You can pick up your rental gear when we open at 8:00am on the day of your hike. If we have availability and gear has had time to dry, we may be able to offer evening pickup the night before—but this isn’t guaranteed. If you need a guaranteed night-before pickup, reserving your gear for two days is the best option.
Should I hire a guide for The Narrows?
Many visitors hike The Narrows independently with rental gear. However, guided trips are a great option for first-time hikers, colder conditions, or anyone who would prefer extra support and local knowledge.
