About Via Ferrata
Literally translated, the Italian word ‘via’ means street; ‘ferrate’ (plural) means railway or railroad. In the US, we have come to know via ferrata as the Iron Path or Iron Way. It is a mountain route equipped with fixed protection like metal runged ladders, cables and bridges, anchored right to the cliffs themselves. Although originally used in Austria and Germany for mountain travel, they were built in Italy during World War I to aid the movement of Italian alpine soldiers and their equipment through the Dolomites.
