I was born in Arizona, but grew up in Hawaii, spending my time body surfing and cattle and horse ranching with my father. So I spent a lot of time outdoors and continued to do so when I moved to the mainland. I have taught wilderness adventure skills, backpacking, and outdoor photography in southern Utah off and on since 1981. Some of these experiences were with a private adventure camp, some with volunteer youth groups, and some as a university professor. I love the red rock country and how it lifts my spirit.
Part of my career included working as a television news photographer and editor in Washington, D.C. and Salt Lake City, Utah. Now I teach photography and broadcasting at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah. I’ve taught photography to thousands of college students and community members.
With my video production skills, I was able to produce an hour-long documentary entitled, “Canyoneering the Colorado Plateau: An Introduction to the Sport.” I followed beginners and advanced canyoneers and showed the interesting details of the sport of canyoneering in southern Utah and northern Arizona. I was able to interview many people involved with the sport including some of the important guidebook authors and some of the faces you may get to know at Zion Adventure Company. In the process, I rappelled, swam, scrambled, and climbed through canyons with my camera in order to tell the story of canyoneering on the Colorado Plateau. I have produced other documentaries about public lands and the people who enjoy and live in these special places.
My home is just a few minutes from the Kolob section of Zion National Park. My wife, Anne, and I have raised our four kids with an interest and love for the red rock country. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to share some of my backyard with clients of Zion Adventure Company.
