Zion Volunteer Opportunity Fall 2010

American’s are internationally famous for their unbridled level of volunteerism, in the homeland and abroad. As described below the work of your fellow citizens is helping build a better Zion National Park as we speak. But don’t let their work limit you. Take a break from your everyday life and invest some time into your favorite National Park. For those who end up here in Zion, we look forward to seeing you in the trenches; continuing to make Zion accessible for nearly 3 million visitors a year, all while preserving its majesty and mystique.

Superintendent Jock Whitworth is announcing a new volunteer opportunity at Zion National Park. Beginning Wednesday, September 15 this opportunity will allow visitors and local residents a chance to take an active role in preserving their national park.

Volunteers provide a wealth of knowledge, skills and labor to the National Park Service and are invaluable in maintaining these national treasures. In Zion National Park alone, more than 100 volunteers each year contribute over 20,000 hours of their time. Volunteers have worked with every division and have completed a diverse number of projects including greeting and orienting visitors, assisting with the park’s plant nursery and managing the campgrounds and backcountry trails.

This new volunteer opportunity will be offered every Wednesday at 9 a.m. through November 27. Those interested in volunteering can gather at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center Shuttle Stop. Projects will include litter removal, minor trail maintenance, and the management of invasive plants. The projects will last two to three hours. Participants should bring water, a hat, sunscreen, and good walking shoes. Gloves and tools will be supplied. Please lend a hand with these much needed tasks that keep the park clean and beautiful.

Everyone is welcome to join these projects. No registration is required for individuals. Groups larger than 10 people are required to pre-register. Minors under the age of 18 must be joined by an adult. Please call contact the volunteer coordinator at 435-772-0184 for more information or to pre-register a group.
