Selected Zion Rock Climbing Closures Begin March 1st

The Park released their annual spring briefing on peregrine climbing closures last week. Here’s the official skinny: Zion National Park Announces Schedule of Climbing Closures Climbing routes on cliffs used by nesting Peregrine Falcons in Zion National Park will be temporarily closed beginning March 1, 2012, in order to protect the nesting success of this bird which is in recovery from “endangered species” status. The closing date is based on analysis of information collected from 2001-2011 regarding the peregrines’ arrival time to their nesting cliffs in the park. The following cliffs will be closed to climbing beginning March 1, 2012: Angels Landing, Cable Mountain, The Great White Throne (beyond single- and double-pitched climbs), Isaac (in Court of the Patriarchs), The Sentinel, Mountain of the Sun, North Twin Brother, Tunnel Wall, The East Temple, Mount Spry, The Streaked Wall, Mount Kinesava, and the Middle Fork of Taylor Creek. All other cliffs will remain open to climbing. Park biologists will monitor the nesting activity of Peregrine Falcons in the park throughout the 2012 breeding season. Angels Landing Closing for Repairs in September and October

Well, it won’t be closed the entire time. It looks like the Park is trying to keep the trail open on the weekends; if you are planning on being here mid-week, please note the closure dates in the below news release. Zion News Release 10-39 Angels Landing Closing for Repairs September 3, 2010 Superintendent Jock Whitworth has announced that the Angels Landing hiking route and all climbing routes on that rock formation will close for several days starting in mid-September. A Zion National Park trail crew will be working on route improvements including re-chiseling existing steps, drilling and installing new posts and chains in some areas to better delineate the route, and adding dry stone masonry to improve footing.  The closure is necessary due to helicopter activity in the area, movement of materials and equipment, and for visitor and work crew safety while work is in progress on the narrow route. September 15th and 16th and September 20th through the 23rd, the West Rim Trail will be closed from the Grotto to Scout Lookout.
