Hey Bill...

YIKES! My daughter and I encountered some ankle deep "quick mud" last year while descending Water Canyon...and found the experience amusing. Now that I've read your account, I will be more cautious when coming upon similar conditions.

Thanks for sharing your experience...and the tips for extricating one's self if found in a similar situation.

My husband Mitch and I had the opportunity to get to know Calvin during a canyoneering trip in September of 2010. He also took time with us afterwards to go over anchors, knots, etc. We also got to have lunch at the Whiptail Grill with him and one of his friends, as well as our go-to guide from ZAC, Scott Williams.

I wish you the best - and know that you will be successful (whatever that definition means to each of us). We'll think of you next month while we're out in the Escalante slots with Scott.

RE: One Wild and Precious Live

A beautifully crafted farewell. In addition to your call to education, I hope you set aside some time to continue your writing. I think you have some things to share that will inspire and motivate others to push their personal boundaries.

My best wishes for a rich and fruitful future.

Ha! It IS a small world... and in Zion Canyon, it is a VERY small world. Wish you would have had more time here in the Park to capture the clouds at their most striking, late in the day when the alpenglow sets them on fire. Really depends on luck though, as Zion isn't a particularly cloudy place. Our best sunsets always have some thin clouds reflecting lots of red, orage, and yellow light though. Come again

My first canyoneering adventure began with the 3-day basic offered by Zion Adventure Company, but I'd been wanting to get into slot canyons for almost two decades before I finally got up the nerve to don a harness and rope and step off the edge. Although difficult for me (I am, after all, afraid of heights and the edge and I work at a desk job), it was nevertheless one of the most amazing and transformative experiences I ever had. My guide, Jonathan Zambella, taught me more than canyoneering skills. His firm yet comforting guidance, wisdom, deep love for nature and for people, and an integrity that was evident from the moment I met him, got me through the worst parts and helped me understand I wasn't just learning knots and ropes and canyoneering skills, I was learning about MYSELF. I've been back many times, and when it comes to Zion, ZAC is "it" for me. What an awesome team. -- Janice
