New Landscaping at ZAC!

For those of you who have visited the ZAC store recently, you may have noticed a few new changes to our building. In addition to our new Fuzo Overland vehicle parked out front, you’ll also see our newly landscaped area as well!                   On April 3rd, a handful of our staff members pulled together and put on a Planting Day to improve the area in front of our building. We planted desert, water-wise plants such as Yucca and Penstemon to create a xeri-scaped rock garden from our parking lot out to SR-9. Aside from planting, we have since been working on laying down weed-barrier, a drip irrigation system, and decorative gravel. Stop by and check it out! BEFORE AFTER!

Welcome to our 2012 Staff!

On March 1st, thirteen fantastic NEW staff members descended upon the Zion Adventure Company loft to begin their lives here in Zion as new ZAC team members. Over the past two weeks, these individuals have morphed into an amazingly cohesive team as they have explored Zion National Park and their roles here at ZAC. Our new team members come from an impressive variety of backgrounds and locations, from New York and Washington State to the Czech Republic! If you’re in town anytime soon, stop into the shop and meet some of the new staff. Ask them lots of questions about the Park, the Zion Narrows, or our guided trips… you might be surprised at how much they already know. If you are a long-time Zion visitor, feel free to share any hints and secrets you might have learned from our staff in the past. We give them everything we’ve got, but our clients are always our best teachers!

Radical Reels Adventure Films In Springdale Monday!

Banff Mountain Film Festival’s “Radical Reels” Adventure Film Tour 8 PM, Monday, October 3rd Tanner Amphitheater, 36 Lion Blvd. Springdale, Utah  For the SECOND year in a row, Zion Adventure Company hosts the Radical Reels adventure film tour, a two-hour collection of the very best short adventure films from 2010. Radical Reels is an outreach of the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival, the preeminent film festival for adventure-goers and outdoor-lovers, held annually in Banff, British Columbia. Just think about how expensive it would be to go to Banff… and then think about how easy and inexpensive it is to come to Springdale. The choice is obvious! Because we are tiny little Springdale, we don’t get a prime-time weekend position for the festival… but that doesn’t mean Zion isn’t the BEST place to kick back and enjoy first-class, adrenaline pumping, incredibly inspiring films. ZAC Hosts Annual Climbing Guides Meeting in November

On Saturday, November 5th, the Professional Climbing Guides Institute will hold their annual BBQ here in Springdale. There will be food, clinics, prizes, and a much anticipated “Unimog vs. Dynometer” challenge. We also expect to have a bunch of guides and climber-types sitting around sharing stories, debating the finer points of anchoring, rigging, teaching, and climbing, and generally dorking out in the climbing realm. We’re planning on having a lot of fun, and everyone is welcome to stop in for part or all of the festivities. Celebrating 15 Years

I created this video, which debuted at our big celebration on September 15th, to commemorate ZAC’s big 15th Anniversary this month. It’s my attempt to capture the scope and magic of the people and adventures ZAC has encompassed over the last decade and a half, which is really a lot to boil down into a nine-minute video. I really enjoyed assembling the movie for everyone; I got to learn so much about our history and our staff. So many amazing people walk in that door… some work for us, but of course most do not. EVERYONE, however, is responsible for making this thing called “Zion Adventure Company” work. Thank you for your love and support, and cheers to many years to come! Anna

Radical Reels Film Fest Coming to Springdale In Two Weeks!

Banff Mountain Film Festival’s “Radical Reels” Tour 8 PM, Monday, October 3rd Tanner Amphitheater, Springdale, Utah  In just two weeks, Zion Adventure Company hosts the Banff Mountain Film Festival’s “Radical Reels” program here in Springdale. Radical Reels is the compact version of the larger BMFF World Tour, the outdoor documentary film series which has garnered wide acclaim around the world. Here’s how the Banff Centre describes this awesome, action-packed film series: The Radical Reels program is made up of short, action-packed climbing, paddling, mountain biking, BASE jumping, skiing, snowboarding, and other adrenaline sport films. We always keep an eye out for films that feature a fresh approach, a new sport, and a radically independent spirit.  This year’s films include paddling, skateboarding, skiing, climbing, and snowboarding – downhill AND cross-country! ZAC 15th Anniversary Party Report

By all accounts, we had an awesome 15th Anniversary celebration yesterday evening at Zion Adventure Company World Headquarters. With help from GT and Zion Party Rentals, we transformed our parking lots into a super classy atmosphere, with white table cloths, chinese lanterns, copious party lights, hundreds of sunflowers, and our own custom fortune cookies. On top of all that, Grumpy Goat Pizza set up their SWEET stone oven in the parking lot and pumped out stellar pizzas and dessert pizzas all night. The scene around the pizza table was somewhat piranic… as soon as the pies hit the table, they were gone. We had a great crowd join us, including clients from around the country, some of our favorite local supporters, and even a few curious passersby. We enjoyed a fresh-off-the-press anniversary video from Anna, some inspiring and moving words from Jonathan, and of course lots of love and laughter from everyone who showed up. Huge thanks to Lanell Dike, who spearheaded the party, and everyone who lent a hand making it happen.

Join Us for the ZAC 15 Anniversary Party Tonight!

Lanell, Scott, Catrin, Jonathan, Anna, and I are putting the finishing touches on the party preparations for this evening. Party lights are going up, flowers are filling vases, and delicious food and drinks are coming together in the kitchen. I’m working on finishing the slideshow, and Anna just gave me a sneak peek of the anniversary video she’s producing. Everything is coming together, and we hope you’re planning on joining us for the fun. In true ZAC tradition, the party should be an adventure. We have no idea how many folks might show up… 30? 100? 300? It might rain, and it might not… we decided this morning not to worry much about it. GT from Zion Party Rentals is helping us with chairs, tables, lights, and more; we sure appreciate the additional party tools. Kimberly Clark, keystone ZAC staff member circa 1999 – 2004, just showed up a few minutes ago to my surprise, and I’m excited to see who else will turn up. Will you? If you have ever been a Zion Adventure Company client, admirer, co-conspirator, or blog reader, we’d love to see you tonight. Come celebrate 15 amazing years with us!

15th Anniversary Video Contest Winners Announced

We had five fun and creative video entries for the “Let Nature Be Your Guide” Photo & Video Contest. Thanks to everyone who viewed and voted on the videos and congratulations to our winners. You can view the videos below, or on our YouTube channel. Our Grand Prize goes to Jeff Guest, who shows us how nature is his guide in this fast-paced montage of canyon adventures. First prize goes to Casey Neiderhauser for his video on ice climbing. Casey describes ice climbing in Southern Utah as a “temperamental affair” because, “You never know where you are going to find climbable ice. One day a rock slab is dripping wet, the next day it is covered in thick wonderful ice, and the next day it could be collapsed in a heap at the bottom of the cliff.” Second prize goes to Shane Burrows for his wonderful video capturing the beauty of “sauntering” through a Kanarra Creek slot canyon. Third prize goes to Po Kai for a new swing dancing twist on the classic Angels Landing assent.
